IRELAND ENJOYED A 21-run win over the UAE via the Duckworth Lewis Method in their second World Twenty20 Group B game in Bangladesh today.
Chasing 124 runs to win, Ireland were well on course to claim the victory on 103-3 when the ground was plunged into darkness before rain came along and the match was finally abandoned.
The result means that Ireland are in a strong position on top of Group B with four points and a net run rate of 0.64 after two games. Phil Simmons’ men are two points clear of both Zimbabwe and Netherlands who have net run rates of 0.13 and 0.09 respectively.
Before rain stopped play Ireland’s batsmen had performed well with captain William Porterfield not out on 33 and Ed Joyce top scoring with 44 from 38 balls.
There was a scare for Ireland though when Paul Stirling had to retire hurt with an elbow injury after facing just five balls. It is believed the opening batsman will be taken for an x-ray on the knock.
Earlier in the day, Ireland’s bowlers had limited UAE to just 123-6 from their 20 overs. Stirling was perhaps the pick of the bowlers with two for 12 from his three overs.
Ireland will play Netherlands on Friday for a place in the Super 10s.
